NAIT Responsibilities: What Dairy Farmers Need to Know When NZ Grazing Is Your Information Provider

At New Zealand Grazing Company, we know your focus is on what matters most — healthy heifers, efficient milk production, and running your farm. But when your young stock head off to grazing, NAIT compliance doesn’t go on holiday.

As your NAIT Accredited Information Provider (IP), we help shoulder the admin load — making sure your obligations are handled efficiently and accurately. But it’s important to understand the difference between what we do for you, and what you’re still legally responsible for as the PICA (Person in Charge of Animals).

Let’s break it down.

🧑‍🌾 Your Role as the PICA

As the PICA, you are responsible for all animals on your property regardless of whether you own them or not — That includes making sure:

  • ✅ Animals born on your property are tagged and registered with NAIT before they leave your farm or within X?? days from birth
  • ✅ Movements to and from your farm (or grazing block) are recorded within 48 hours
  • ✅ Your NAIT account and location details are accurate and up to date
  • ✅ You confirm receipt of animals when they arrive (this is important – failure to confirm the arrival of animals will result in an incomplete NAIT movement)
  • ✅ If an animal loses its NAIT /EID/RFID tag while on the PICA’s farm it is legally the PICAs responsibility to replace it (regardless of who owns the animal).
  • ✅ All PICAs must have spare NAIT /EID/RFID tags registered to their farm to replace lost tags.

👉 Bottom line: Using an IP helps, but doesn’t shift legal responsibility — it’s still yours.

🏢 Our Role as Your Information Provider

As your NAIT-accredited IP, we take care of the technical NAIT tasks on your behalf. With your authorisation, we can:

  • 📋 Record movements of animals to and from our grazing blocks
  • 🏷️ Assist with tag and registration updates ie EID changes on farm, record deaths etc
  • 📤 Submit data directly to NAIT for movements and animal linking
  • ⚠️ Notify you if anything needs your action (e.g. errors, missing tags)
  • 🔁 Work with NAIT Limited if corrections or clarification are needed

Before we can start, we’ll need a signed agreement giving us formal access to act on your behalf.
